Linecast

Help & frequently asked questions

What the app does

Linecast is a teleprompter for people who record themselves. Your script scrolls at the speed you set, with a reading line that keeps your eyes close to the camera, so you can talk to your audience instead of reading off a page.

Getting started

  1. Open a script. The list starts with a practice script, “Welcome to Linecast”. To write your own, tap the pen icon, type a title and paste or type the text.
  2. Start the prompter. After a 3-2-1 countdown the text scrolls. Read the line next to the red marker.
  3. Pause and go back. Tap anywhere on the text to pause; tap again to carry on. Drag the text up or down to skip ahead or go back a few lines.
  4. Adjust. While paused, use minus and plus for the speed, or the Aa button for text size, line spacing, margins, colours, mirror, upside down, the reading line and the countdown.

Questions

What does the speed mean?

Words per minute. Most people read aloud at 120 to 160. The editor and the list show how long each script takes at the speed you chose, and the speed is remembered for next time.

I use a teleprompter glass. How do I flip the text?

Pause, tap Aa and turn on Mirror: the text is flipped left to right so it reads correctly in a beam-splitter glass. Upside down is for rigs that show the screen through a mirror.

How does recording work?

With Pro, open a script and tap Record. The camera fills the screen and the script runs in a strip right under the lens, so you look into the camera while you read. The red button starts and stops a take; the text starts with it. Each take is saved to Photos as a 1080p video with sound. The script is never in the video. You can switch between the front and back camera and show a grid.

How does voice scroll work?

With Pro, turn on Voice scroll under Aa. The text then follows what you say instead of scrolling at a fixed speed: skip a word or say one differently and it still keeps up. Speech is recognised on your device only; nothing is sent anywhere. The language is set per script in the editor (Device language by default). If that language has no on-device model on your iPhone or iPad, or speech recognition is turned off, Linecast says so and scrolls at a steady speed.

Can I use a keyboard or a pedal?

Yes, with Pro: turn on Keyboard and pedal remote under Aa. Space pauses and resumes, ↑ and ↓ change the speed, ← and → jump to the previous or next sentence, Page Up and Page Down jump a paragraph. Most Bluetooth page-turner pedals send arrow or page keys.

Which files can I import?

With Pro: plain text (.txt), Markdown (.md) and RTF (.rtf), from the tray icon in the list. Formatting is removed; only the words are kept. You can also paste text with the paste button in the editor.

Why did it ask for the camera, microphone or speech recognition?

Only when you use a feature that needs them: camera and microphone when you open Record, speech recognition when voice scroll starts, and Photos (add only) when the first take is saved. If you said no, you can turn access on in the Settings app under Linecast.

What is free, and what is Pro?

Free: up to three scripts and the whole prompter. Pro is a one-time in-app purchase that adds recording, voice scroll, the keyboard and pedal remote, unlimited scripts and file import. There are no ads and no subscription.

I paid but it is still locked

Open Settings (the gear in the script list) and tap Restore Purchase, signed in with the Apple Account you bought with.

Can I get a refund?

Refunds are handled by Apple: reportaproblem.apple.com.

What data is collected?

None. There is no account and no ads, and the app does not use the network apart from the App Store for the purchase. Scripts stay on your device; videos go to your photo library. See the Privacy Policy.
