Additives: E-Number Decoder

Help & frequently asked questions

How it works

  1. Look Up: type a code (330, E 330) or part of a name, or browse by function (colour, preservative, emulsifier and the other EU classes).
  2. Scan: tap Take Photo or Choose Photo and photograph an ingredient list. Every E-number and additive name found is listed and highlighted in the read text. Try the Sample Label shows how it works without a product at hand.
  3. Tap any additive for its names in 12 languages, its functions in food and its EU status.

Questions

Does the app say whether an additive is good or bad?

No. There are no scores, ratings or "avoid" lists. The app says what an E-number is: its name, what it does in food and whether the EU authorises it. Where the EU specification states what a substance is made from (for example insects for E120), that note is shown as written there.

Where does the list come from?

From the EU list of food additives, Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008, Annex II (consolidated version of 18 August 2026), with sub-numbers from Regulation (EU) No 231/2012. Names in languages outside the EU come from the Turkish Food Codex, the EAEU regulation TR TS 029/2012 and common label names; where none was found, the English name is shown.

A code on my label was not recognised

Codes that are not on the current EU list appear under Not on the EU list: the photo may have been misread, or the code is used outside the EU. For a better reading, let the ingredient list fill the photo and keep it sharp. Always check the label itself.

What is free, and what is Pro?

Free: search, browse, every additive's page and scanning with the full result. Pro is a one-time in-app purchase, not a subscription: My List (additives you choose to have marked on labels), favourites, past readings and export of a reading as text.

Does it need the internet or the camera?

No internet at all. The camera is asked for only when you tap Take Photo; Choose Photo needs no permission. The photo is read on your iPhone and not stored.

I paid but it is still locked

Open Settings (the gear) and tap Restore Purchase, signed in with the Apple Account you bought with.

Can I get a refund?

Refunds are handled by Apple: reportaproblem.apple.com.

What data is collected?

None. Your list, favourites and past readings are one file on your iPhone; Settings › Delete All Data removes it. See the Privacy Policy.
