Beatwise

Help & frequently asked questions

What the app does

Beatwise is a metronome. It plays a click at the tempo you set, from 20 to 300 BPM, and lights the beats of the bar as they sound. Every click is placed on the exact audio sample, so it does not drift however long you play.

Getting started

  1. Start. Tap the large play button. The click starts and the dots at the top light up with each beat; the accented first beat is the bigger dot.
  2. Set the tempo. Drag around the dial, tap − or +, tap the number to type a tempo, or tap Tap in time with the music. The Italian marking (Andante, Allegro…) under the dial tells you which tempo range you are in.
  3. Choose the time signature with the first chip under the dial: 1/4 to 7/4, 5/8, 6/8, 7/8, 9/8 and 12/8.
  4. Sound opens the click sounds, the volume, the accented first beat, and the screen flash and vibration options.

Questions

How accurate is it?

Clicks are not fired by a timer. Beatwise works out the exact sample of every click in advance and hands the audio to the system a fraction of a second ahead, so the spacing is exact to one sample (about 0.02 ms). A tempo change takes effect from the next beat.

Does it keep playing when the screen locks?

Yes. It keeps playing in the background and on the lock screen, where you can also pause and restart it. After a phone call or Siri it carries on at the next bar. If you unplug headphones it stops, so it does not suddenly play through the speaker.

Can I play along with music from another app?

Turn on Play along with other apps in Settings (the gear). Other audio then keeps playing under the click. The lock screen controls are not shown in that mode.

What do the beat dots mean?

One dot per beat of the bar. A big dot is an accented beat, a small one a normal beat, a hollow ring a silent beat. With Pro, tap a dot to change it: normal, accent, silent.

How do the trainers work?

With Pro, open Trainers. The speed trainer starts at a start tempo and adds a few BPM every few bars until it reaches the target. The gap trainer plays a number of bars with the click and then a number of silent bars: keep playing, and when the click comes back you hear whether you stayed in time. Polyrhythm plays a second voice against the beat, for example three against two.

What are presets and set lists?

With Pro, a preset saves a tempo, time signature, accents and subdivision (Library › Save current settings). A set list puts presets in playing order; play it and the song name appears at the top with arrows to go to the previous or next song.

Is there a tuner?

No. Beatwise only makes sound and never uses the microphone.

What is free, and what is Pro?

Free: the whole metronome — tempo, tap tempo, every time signature, accented first beat, four sounds, volume, flash, vibration and background playback, with no time limit. Pro is a one-time in-app purchase that adds subdivisions, accent patterns, the speed and gap trainers, polyrhythms, presets and set lists, and four more sounds. There are no ads and no subscription.

I paid but it is still locked

Open Settings (the gear) and tap Restore Purchase, signed in with the Apple Account you bought with.

Can I get a refund?

Refunds are handled by Apple: reportaproblem.apple.com.

What data is collected?

None. There is no account and no ads, and the app does not use the network apart from the App Store for the purchase. Presets and set lists stay on your device. See the Privacy Policy.
