Cutout

Help & frequently asked questions

How it works

  1. Tap Choose Photo and pick a photo. The subject (an object, a person or a pet) is cut out of its background on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Under Background choose transparent or white; under Canvas keep the Original frame or choose 1:1 to center the subject on a square, with Padding around it.
  3. Tap Share to send the image to another app, or Save to Photos. Transparent images are saved as PNG, the others as JPEG.
  4. Your recent cutouts are listed on the main screen. Tap one to change its look; swipe left to delete it.

Questions

It says “No subject found”

The app looks for something that stands out from the background. Try a photo where the object, person or pet is clearly separate from what is behind it, with some light on it.

It says “Subject detection didn’t run”

Subject detection uses Apple’s on-device Vision framework and needs iOS 17 on an iPhone or iPad. Try again; if it keeps failing, close the app and open it again. Nothing is saved when it fails.

Can I erase or restore parts by hand?

No. Cutout keeps what Vision finds. With Pro, when a photo has several subjects you can tap each one to keep it or leave it out, and soften the edge. It does not erase objects inside the photo or retouch it.

What is free, and what is Pro?

Free: the cutout, transparent or white background, the Original and 1:1 canvases with padding, and export up to 1600 px on the long side. Pro is a one-time in-app purchase, not a subscription: export at the photo’s full size, any background color and a soft shadow, the 4:5, 3:4 and 16:9 canvases, choosing subjects and softening the edge, and batch (up to 30 photos with the same look).

Why does it ask for access to Photos?

Only when you tap Save to Photos, and only to add the image. The app cannot see your library; photos come in through the system photo picker, which needs no permission.

I paid but it is still locked

Open Settings (the gear) and tap Restore Purchase, signed in with the Apple Account you bought with.

Can I get a refund?

Refunds are handled by Apple: reportaproblem.apple.com.

What data is collected?

None. Photos are processed on your device and never uploaded. Imported photos, their masks and your recent edits stay inside the app until you delete them (Settings › Delete All Recent Edits). See the Privacy Policy.
