Help & frequently asked questions
Decibel Meter shows an approximate sound level from your phone’s microphone: the level in dB on a large dial, minimum, average and maximum, the last minute as a chart and a scale of everyday sounds. It works with no connection and no account. It is not a calibrated sound level meter and cannot replace one for legal, workplace or medical measurements.
The line under the dial says what the level sounds like. Tap it for the full noise scale, with your current level placed on it.
The microphone reports digital levels (dBFS). The app adds a fixed offset of 123 dB to turn them into an approximate sound pressure level, and uses iOS’s measurement mode so no automatic gain changes the signal. Phone models, cases and how you hold the phone change the reading by several decibels. With Pro you can set a calibration offset: put the phone next to a calibrated meter or a 94 dB calibrator and adjust until both agree.
Readings around 30–35 dB are close to the phone microphone’s own noise floor and are not reliable: a very quiet room reads higher than it is.
dB is the flat, unweighted level: every frequency counts the same. dBA (Pro) applies the A-weighting of IEC 61672, which follows the ear’s lower sensitivity to bass and very high notes. Noise rules and hearing guidance are written in dBA. Changing the weighting keeps the running measurement in the history and starts a new one.
The dial uses the standard Fast time weighting (125 ms), like a hand-held meter; MIN, AVG and MAX are taken from it. Leq (Pro) is the energy average: the steady level that carries the same sound energy as the whole measurement. Loud moments count for more, so Leq is always at or above the plain average. Noise limits are often given as a Leq over a set time, such as one minute or one hour.
On a phone set to Korean or the Korean region, the noise scale also lists Korea’s apartment floor-noise limits for direct impact noise: 1-minute Leq 39 dB(A) by day and 34 dB(A) at night, maximum 57 dB(A) by day and 52 dB(A) at night (day 06:00–22:00, night 22:00–06:00). A maximum limit counts as exceeded only when it is passed 3 or more times in an hour. A phone reading is a reference only, not an official measurement.
Free: the live level in dB, minimum, average and maximum, the last-minute chart and the noise scale. Decibel Meter Pro (one payment, no subscription) adds dBA, Leq, the history of your measurements with PDF and CSV export, an in-app level alert and the calibration offset. Pro options are on the More screen (… at the top right) and show a PRO badge while locked.
No. The level alert turns the dial red and vibrates while the app is open. The app stops measuring when it goes to the background and sends no notifications.
