Help & frequently asked questions

How to play

Every row, every column and every 3 × 3 box holds each digit from 1 to 9 exactly once. Givens are printed dark; the digits you write are in ink.

  1. Tap a cell, then a digit on the pad. Settings › Input can swap the order: pick the digit first, then tap cells to place it.
  2. With no cell selected, tapping a digit lights every place it already sits on the board.
  3. Notes writes small candidates into the corners of a cell. Candidates writes every possible digit into every empty cell at once; one Undo takes them all back.
  4. A row, column or box that closes gets a brief sweep. A wrong digit shakes and is marked twice, by colour and by a line under it (Settings › Mistake check).
  5. The pause button turns the sheet over and stops the clock. The top-right menu offers Reveal one cell, Clear entries, Start over and Show the solution (which ends the game without a win).
  6. On an iPad keyboard the number keys write, the arrows move, N toggles notes, H asks for a hint, space pauses and ⌘Z undoes.

Questions

What do the difficulty names promise?

After a puzzle is generated the app solves it the way a person would and names it by the hardest technique it needed. Easy and Medium fall to naked and hidden singles alone (Easy has more givens). Hard needs naked pairs or box–line eliminations. Expert needs a hidden pair or an X-Wing. Evil goes beyond those techniques. Every puzzle has exactly one solution.

How do hints work?

Tap the light bulb. A hint places one digit, lights the cells it reasoned from and names the technique in a card under the board. If a wrong digit is on the board, the hint corrects that first; it never places a wrong number. Free play gives each puzzle a hint budget, from 5 on Easy down to 1 on Evil; Sudoku Pro removes the budget.

What is the daily puzzle?

One puzzle a day, the same for everyone, drawn from the date: easy at weekends, evil on Fridays. Days solved in a row make a streak. Tap the week strip on the desk to open the calendar; the last seven days can be played by anyone, older days open with Sudoku Pro. A daily left half done picks up where you left it.

What does the ledger show?

The chart icon opens the ledger: games solved, win rate, the daily streak, total time at the desk, the last twelve weeks as a grid of days, best and average time per difficulty, recent times and the achievements. A finished grid can be shared as a square print with your time.

Can I enter a puzzle from the newspaper?

Yes, with Sudoku Pro: Enter from paper on the desk. Type the givens; the app checks that the grid has one solution, grades it and opens it as a game with hints.

Can I turn the sounds off?

Yes. Settings › Board sounds and Haptic feedback. The sounds were made for the board, play quietly, never interrupt music and stay silent when the ring switch is on silent.

What is free, and what is Pro?

Free: every difficulty, the daily puzzle and the last seven days of its archive, notes, candidates, the ledger, sharing, one ink (Teal) and all four papers, plus the hint budget above. Sudoku Pro is a one-time in-app purchase: unlimited hints, the other four inks, entry from paper and the whole archive. There are no ads and no subscription. Buyers of the earlier Remove Ads purchase have Pro.

I paid but it is still locked

Open Settings (the sliders icon, top right) and tap Restore purchase, signed in with the Apple Account you bought with.

Can I get a refund?

Refunds are handled by Apple: reportaproblem.apple.com.

What data is collected?

None. Saved games, settings and the ledger stay on your device; the app makes no network connection other than the App Store's own for the purchase. See the Privacy Policy.
