Trace & Draw

Help & frequently asked questions

Trace & Draw lays a picture over your camera image, so you can hold your phone above a sheet of paper and draw along the lines you see. It works with no connection and no account, and your photos never leave your device.

How to trace

  1. Tap Choose a Photo, or start with one of the drawings (tulips, a butterfly, a cat).
  2. Allow the camera when asked. It is used only to show the paper under the picture; nothing is recorded or saved.
  3. Rest your phone on a stand, a glass or a stack of books, about 20–30 cm (8–12 in) above the paper.
  4. Adjust the picture with your fingers: drag to move it, pinch to zoom, twist to turn it. The slider makes it fainter or stronger, so you can see your pencil lines too.
  5. Tap Lock. Touches no longer move the picture. Now look at the screen and trace.

Questions

Why does the picture move when my phone moves?

The picture is overlaid on the live camera feed, the camera-overlay technique AR drawing apps use; it does not anchor to the paper. If the phone moves, the picture moves with it and no longer lines up with what you have drawn. Keep the phone still: a phone stand, a glass or a pile of books works well. Lock the position once the picture fits.

My pencil is hard to see on the screen

Put good light on the paper, lower the opacity so the picture is fainter, and use a darker pencil or a fine pen. Mirror flips the picture left to right if you need it the other way round.

What is Lightbox mode?

The screen becomes a light table: the picture is shown on white at full brightness and the screen stays on. Place the picture, lay thin paper (tracing paper, printer paper) on the screen and tap Start Tracing. From then on touches are ignored, so the paper and your hand cannot move anything. To get the controls back, touch and hold the small lock in the top left corner for one second. Your screen brightness goes back to what it was when you close Lightbox mode. Press lightly: a screen is glass.

What do Lines and Grid do?

Lines turns a photo into Outlines (with a Detail slider) or a Pencil sketch, which are much easier to trace than a full photo. It is meant for photos: the bundled drawings already are outlines, so Outlines shows them as they are. Grid puts squares over the picture for the grid method: draw the same grid lightly on your paper and copy one square at a time.

The camera shows nothing

If you did not allow the camera, the app says so and offers Open Settings; turn on Camera for Trace & Draw there. If another app is using the camera, it comes back when that app lets go. If the camera stops on its own, leave the app and come back to start it again. On iPads that support it, the camera keeps running in Split View and Stage Manager.

Why does my iPad not turn?

On iPadOS 26 and later, when Trace & Draw fills the screen, the screen keeps its orientation while the picture is locked and while Lightbox mode is tracing, so a turn of the iPad cannot move or resize the picture under your drawing. Unlock it and the screen turns again. On earlier iPadOS versions, and in Split View or a window, lock the screen orientation in Control Center before you start tracing.

What is free, and what is Pro?

Free: your picture over the camera image, opacity, mirror, lock and reset, the three drawings and one saved picture. Trace & Draw Pro (one payment, no subscription) adds the line and sketch filter, the drawing grid, Lightbox mode and several saved pictures. Buttons that need Pro show a PRO badge.

Calcar Dibujos

Ayuda y preguntas frecuentes

Cómo calcar

Aiuto e domande frequenti

Come ricalcare
